FURNACE STOPPED WORKING? HERE'S WHAT TO DO

What do you do when the heating system stops working? If it's a simple fix, you don't want to pay a service fee. Before you call the HVAC technician, you may want to try these tips:

  • Check the filter. A clogged filter can prevent air from moving through the furnace, and it's a critical component to keeping the heating system operating. If the filter looks full – and you'll know if it is – install a new one.
  • Test the thermostat. Did someone turn it down without you knowing? Is it set to "heat"? Check the settings and turn the temperature up a bit to see if the furnace cycles on.
  • Go to the electrical panel. If the circuit breaker tripped or a fuse blew, the heating system will stop working. Turn the breaker on and off to see it that resets it. If the furnace fuse has blown, or the circuit breaker is thrown, it is probably time to call an expert.
