THERMOSTAT TEMPERATURES KEEP WALLETS HOT IN THE WINTER

With the holidays around the corner, spending money on a thermostat is not ideal. As winter and cooler weather, knocks on the door, here are a few tips that can save money and energy.

Keeping a thermostat set to 68 degrees in the winter is an ideal temperature for a money saving season. According to the Energy.gov, a homeowner can save up to 10% a year on heating and cooling by turning temps back 7-10 degrees for 8 hours a day from the normal setting. If this temperature seems a little frigid for a home, sweaters and other warm clothing can help curve the chill and keep residents comfortable.

Another way to save is to get a programmable thermostat. These systems help regulate temperature at different times of the day. When no one is in the home, it can increase the temperature, and then regulate it back to normal when the residence comes back into the home. This also helps to prevent discomfort, and the resident doesn't have to remember to set the thermostat every time they enter or leave the home.

Keeping a furnace or heat pump well serviced is also a way to cut costs. Efficiency will help the system run in top shape, allowing the owner to spend money on other things, and keep temperatures at a true reading. According to the Consumer Energy Center, keeping your furnace clean, lubricated and properly adjusted will reduce energy use, saving up to 5 percent of heating costs.

Maintenance with Ragsdale also saves money on repairs and services. Before the weather turns cold for good, make sure the furnace or heat pump is good to go.
